Getting started
LifeKnot turns the conversations you record on Apple Watch into a journal for the day. Here is what to know first.
First steps
- Open LifeKnot on iPhone, sign in with Apple and start your subscription.
- Review what is sent and agree to cloud processing (recording and on-iPhone transcription work even without it).
- Open LifeKnot on Apple Watch and tap "Auto record". It records only while someone is speaking.
- Enroll your voice in Settings › My voice. Conversations where you are not speaking (people at the next table, for example) are then not transcribed.
Your day
- During the day: Audio reaches your iPhone and is transcribed on the iPhone. Each conversation gets a title and summary on the Today screen.
- At night: After the journal time (23:00 by default; change it in Settings › Diary), the day's diary and cover image are created from your conversations. You get a notification when it is ready.
- One diary entry per day, never rewritten. You can also make today's entry early with "Make today's diary now".
Reading your diary
- Tap the mark next to a sentence to open the conversation it came from.
- The Journal tab shows one diary page per day, plus weekly and monthly reflections.
- "Reflect by voice (up to 2 min)" lets you record up to two minutes about your day.
On Apple Watch
- Pause and Resume: turns the microphone off without ending the conversation; Resume continues it. Use the Watch screen, or say "Pause LifeKnot recording" / "Resume LifeKnot recording" to Siri.
- Stop: stops recording and closes the conversation (it moves on to the summary right away). Tap Auto record to record again.
- Split here: keeps recording but starts a new conversation from that point.
- ★: tap at an important moment to mark the conversation.
- Switch to continuous: for talks or seminars you want recorded to the end. It closes the conversation so far and keeps recording through quiet moments. When it's over, tap "Back to Auto record".
- Keep listen-only audio: with Auto record, also transcribes conversations you are not part of. Turn it off when you're done listening.
- Places not to record: add them in Settings › No-record places, and recording stops automatically while you are there.
After Siri or a call
Using Siri or taking a call interrupts recording on the Watch. watchOS doesn't let LifeKnot restart the microphone while it isn't on screen.
- Recommended setting: on the Watch, go to Settings › General › Return to Clock › LifeKnot and turn on "Return to App". After Siri, the Watch returns to LifeKnot and recording resumes automatically.
- Interruption notices: if recording can't resume, you'll get "Tap to resume recording" a few times until it does (right away, then after 3, 10 and 30 minutes). Turn this off in LifeKnot on the Watch › Settings & status › "Notify when interrupted".
- Opening LifeKnot resumes recording right away.
Share with AI
From "Share with AI" on a conversation, a diary page or the Journal tab, you can send the records you choose to apps such as ChatGPT or Claude. Pick what to ask (summarize, list my to-dos, draft an email, and so on) and choose the AI app from the share sheet. Nothing goes through LifeKnot's servers.
Other people's voices
- When you record, let the people around you know, and be considerate of the situation.
- On a conversation screen, you can exclude a speaker as a bystander. What they said is then not used in summaries, the diary, answers or records shared with AI.
Battery and storage
- With Auto record on all day, Apple Watch uses about 3–4% battery per hour (an example from our development measurements).
- Audio is deleted from the iPhone 24 hours after it is transcribed. What remains is the text and one cover image per day.
Troubleshooting
- No weather, photos or steps in the journal: check location, photos and Health permissions in Settings › Appearance & permissions › Permission status.
- Auto record doesn't start on the Watch: after LifeKnot on the Watch is updated or reinstalled, it has to receive your subscription status from the iPhone again. Keep LifeKnot open on the iPhone, open LifeKnot on the Watch, and wait about a minute.
- Watch recording stays "Interrupted": see "After Siri or a call" above.
- Still not working: send a report from Settings › Support › "Report a problem". It includes the app version and recent activity codes (never conversation contents), which helps us find the cause quickly.
